RESUMO

In order to meet the needs of refined landslide risk management, the extended correlation framework of dynamic susceptibility modeling desiderates to be further explored. This work considered the Wanzhou channel of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area as the experimental site, with a transportation channel with significant economic value to carry out innovative research in two stages. (i) Five machine learning models logistic regression (LR), multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and decision tree (DT) were used to explore landslide susceptibility distribution based on detailed landslide boundaries. (ii) Based on the PS-InSAR technology, the dynamic factor of deformation intensity was obtained. Subsequently, the dynamic factor was combined with proposed static factors (topography conditions, geological conditions, hydrological conditions, and human activities) to generate dynamic landslide susceptibility mapping (DLSM). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were proposed as evaluation metrics. Compared with ignoring the dynamic factor, the predictive accuracy of some models was further improved when considering the dynamic factor. Especially the DT model, the area under the curve of ROC (AUC) value increased by 2%, and obtained the highest AUC value (93.1%). The susceptibility results of introducing the dynamic factor are more in line with the spatial distribution of actual landslides. The research framework proposed in this study has important reference significance for the dynamic management and prevention of landslide disasters in the study area.

RESUMO

Landslide susceptibility zoning is necessary for landslide risk management. This study aims to conduct the landslide susceptibility evaluation based on a model coupled with information value (IV) and logistic regression (LR) for Badong County in Hubei Province, China. Through the screening of landslide predisposing factors based on correlation analysis, a spatial database including 11 landslide factors and 588 historical landslides was constructed in ArcGIS. The IV, LR and their coupled model were then developed. To validate the accuracy of the three models, the receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) and the landslide density curves were correspondingly created. The results showed that the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCs) of the three models were 0.758, 0.786 and 0.818, respectively. Moreover, the landslide density increased exponentially with the landslide susceptibility, but the coupled model exhibited a higher growth rate among the three models, indicating good performance of the proposed model in landslide susceptibility evaluation. The landslide susceptibility map generated by the coupled model demonstrated that the high and very high landslide susceptibility area mainly concentrated along rivers and roads. Furthermore, by counting the landslide numbers and analyzing the landslide susceptibility within each town in Badong County, it was discovered that Yanduhe, Xinling, Dongrangkou and Guandukou were the main landslide-prone areas. This research will contribute to landslide prevention and mitigation and serve as a reference for other areas.

RESUMO

The number of input factors affects the prediction accuracy of a model. Factor screening plays an important role as the starting point for data input. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of different factor screening methods on the prediction results. Taking the 2014 landslide inventory of Jingdong County as an example, a landslide database was constructed based on 136 landslide events and 11 selected factors, which were randomly divided into a training dataset and a test dataset according to a ratio of 7:3. Four factor screening methods, namely, the information gain ratio (IGR), GeoDetector, Pearson correlation coefficient and multicollinearity test (MT), were selected to screen the factors. A random forest (RF) model was then used in combination with each factor set for landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM). Finally, accuracy validation was performed using confusion matrices and ROC curves. The results show that factor screening is beneficial in improving the accuracy of the resulting model compared to the original model. Second, the IGR_RF model had the highest AUC value (0.9334), which was higher than that of the MT_RF model without factor screening (0.9194), and the IGR_RF model predicted the most landslides in the very high susceptibility zone (51.22%), indicating the good prediction performance of the IGR_RF model. Finally, the factor weighting analysis revealed that NDVI, elevation and aspect had the greatest influence on landslides in Jingdong County and that curvature had the least influence on landslides. This study can provide a reference for factor screening in LSM.

RESUMO

Landslides are a common natural disaster, having severe socio-economic effects and posing immense threat to safety, such as loss of life at a global scale. Modeling and predicting the possibility of landslides are important in order to monitor and prevent their negative consequences. In this study, landslides are the primary research object. Further, the frequency ratio (FR) method was applied to the random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree (DT) regression algorithms for landslide sensitivity assessment. It was also applied to landslide risk assessment mapping in the Longmen Mountain area. Therefore, taking into account the positive and negative sample balance, 7774 historical landslide points and 7774 non-landslide points were selected and divided them into training sets and test sets. The influence factors were selected and analyzed through multicollinearity analysis and the FR method. To improve the performance of the model and the accuracy of the findings, the individual environmental factors are normalized. Subsequently, the LSI (landslide susceptibility index), was obtained by calculating the frequency ratio. Following this, the RF, SVM, and DT were used to construct the model. The trained model calculates the landslide probability of each cell in the study area and generates the resultant susceptibility map. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and R2 of this region were calculated to evaluate the model's performance. The results indicate that RF obtained the highest predictive performance (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.82) in landslide risk prediction, followed by SVM (AUC = 0.8) and DT (AUC = 0.69). The results of this study serve as a predictive map for landslide susceptibility areas and provide critical support for the security of lives and property for the human and socio-economic development in the Longmen Mountain region. In addition, the experiment results reveal that the machine learning model based on the FR method can improve the accuracy and performance of methods in studies related to landslide susceptibility. The method is equally applicable to research in other fields.

RESUMO

At present, landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) based on landslide characteristics in different areas is an effective measure for landslide management. Nujiang Prefecture in China has steep mountain slopes, a large amount of water and loose soil, and frequent landslide disasters, which have caused a large number of casualties and economic losses. This paper aims to understand the characteristics and formation mechanism of regional landslides through the evaluation of landslide susceptibility so as to provide relevant references and suggestions for spatial planning and disaster prevention and mitigation in Nujiang Prefecture. Based on the grid cell, this study selected 10 parameters, namely elevation, slope, aspect, lithology, proximity to faults, proximity to road, proximity to rivers, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), land-use type, and precipitation. Support vector machine (SVM), certainty factor method (CF), and deterministic coefficient method-support vector machine (CF-SVM) were used to evaluate the landslide susceptibility in Nujiang Prefecture. According to these three models, the study area was divided into five landslide susceptibility grades, including extremely high susceptibility, high susceptibility, moderate susceptibility, low susceptibility, and very low susceptibility. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was applied to verify the accuracy of the model. The results showed that CF model (ROC = 0.865), SVM model (ROC = 0.892), CF-SVM model (ROC = 0.925), and CF-SVM model showed better performance. Therefore, CF-SVM model results were selected for analysis. The study found that the characteristics of high and extremely high landslide-prone areas in Nujiang Prefecture have the following characteristics: intense human activities, large density of buildings and arable land, rich water resources, good economic development, perfect transportation facilities, and complex topography and landform. In addition, there is a finding inconsistent with our common sense that the distribution of landslide disasters in the study area does not decrease with the increase of NDVI value. This is because the Nujiang River basin is a high mountain canyon area with low rock strength, barren soil, and underdeveloped vegetation and root system. In an area with large slope, the probability of landslide disaster will increase with the increase of NDVI. The CF-SVM coupling model adopted in this study is a good first attempt in the study of landslide hazard susceptibility in Nujiang Prefecture.

RESUMO

In complex mountainous areas where earthquakes are frequent, landslide hazards pose a significant threat to human life and property due to their high degree of concealment, complex development mechanism, and abrupt nature. In view of the problems of the existing landslide hazard susceptibility evaluation model, such as poor effectiveness and inaccuracy of landslide hazard data and the need for experts to participate in the calculation of a large number of evaluation factor weight classification statistics. In this paper, a combined SBAS-InSAR (Small Baseline Subsets-Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and PSO-RF (Particle Swarm Optimization-Random Forest) algorithm was proposed to evaluate the susceptibility of landslide hazards in complex mountainous regions characterized by frequent earthquakes, deep river valleys, and large terrain height differences. First, the SBAS-InSAR technique was used to invert the surface deformation rates of the study area and identified potential landslide hazards. Second, the study area was divided into 412,585 grid cells, and the 16 selected environmental factors were analyzed comprehensively to identify the most effective evaluation factors. Last, 2722 landslide (1361 grid cells) and non-landslide (1361 grid cells) grid cells in the study area were randomly divided into a training dataset (70%) and a test dataset (30%). By analyzing real landslide and non-landslide data, the performances of the PSO-RF algorithm and three other machine learning algorithms, BP (back propagation), SVM (support vector machines), and RF (random forest) algorithms were compared. The results showed that 329 potential landslide hazards were updated using the surface deformation rates and existing landslide cataloguing data. Furthermore, the area under the curve (AUC) value and the accuracy (ACC) of the PSO-RF algorithm were 0.9567 and 0.8874, which were higher than those of the BP (0.8823 and 0.8274), SVM (0.8910 and 0.8311), and RF (0.9293 and 0.8531), respectively. In conclusion, the method put forth in this paper can be effectively updated landslide data sources and implemented a susceptibility prediction assessment of landslide disasters in intricate mountainous areas. The findings can serve as a strong reference for the prevention of landslide hazards and decision-making mitigation by government departments.

RESUMO

At present, landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) based on the characteristics of landslides in different areas is an effective prevention measure for landslide management. In Enshi County, China, the landslides are mainly triggered by high-intensity rainfall, which causes a large number of casualties and economic losses every year. In order to effectively control the landslide occurrence in Enshi County and mitigate the damages caused by the landslide. In this study, eight indicators were selected as assessment indicators for LSA in Enshi County. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model, information value (IV) model and analytic hierarchy process-information value (AHP-IV) model were, respectively, applied to assess the landslide distribution of landslides in the rainy season (RS) and non-rainy season (NRS). Based on the three models, the study area was classified into five levels of landslide susceptibility, including very high susceptibility, high susceptibility, medium susceptibility, low susceptibility, and very low susceptibility. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to verify the model accuracy. The results showed that the AHP-IV model (ROC = 0.7716) was more suitable in RS, and the IV model (ROC = 0.8237) was the most appropriate model in NRS. Finally, combined with the results of landslide susceptibility in RS and NRS, an integrated landslide susceptibility map was proposed, involving year-round high susceptibility, RS high susceptibility, NRS high susceptibility and year-round low susceptibility. The integrated landslide susceptibility results provide a more detailed division in terms of the different time periods in a year, which is beneficial for the government to efficiently allocate landslide management funds and propose effective landslide management strategies. Additionally, the focused arrangement of monitoring works in landslide-prone areas enable collect landslide information efficiently, which is helpful for the subsequent landslide preventive management.

RESUMO

Landslide susceptibility maps (LSM) are often used by government departments to carry out land use management and planning, which supports decision makers in urban and infrastructure planning. The accuracy of conventional landslide susceptibility maps is often affected by classification errors. Consequently, they become less reliable, which makes it difficult to meet the needs of decision-makers. Therefore, it is proposed in this paper to reduce classification errors and improve LSM reliability by integrating the Small Baseline Subsets-Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-InSAR) technique and LSM. By using the logistic regression model (LR) and the support vector machine model (SVM), experiments were conducted to generate LSM in the Dongchuan district. It was classified into five classes: very high susceptibility, high susceptibility, medium susceptibility, low susceptibility, and very low susceptibility. Then, the surface deformation rate of the Dongchuan area was obtained through the ascending and descending orbit sentinel-1A data from January 2018 to January 2021. To correct the classification errors, the SBAS-InSAR technique was integrated into LSM under the optimal model by constructing the contingency matrix. Finally, the LSMs obtained before and after correction were compared. Moreover, the correction results were validated and analyzed by combining remote sensing images, InSAR deformation results, and field surveys. According to the research results, the susceptibility class of 66,094 classification error cells (59.48 km2) was significantly improved in the LSM after the integration of the SBAS-InSAR correction. The enhanced susceptibility classes and the spectral characteristics of remote sensing images are highly consistent with the trends of InSAR cumulative deformation and the results of field investigation. It is suggested that integrating SBAS-InSAR and LSM is effective in correcting classification errors and further improving the reliability of LSM for landslide prediction. The LSM obtained by using this method plays an important role in guiding local government departments on disaster prevention and mitigation, which is conducive to eliminating the risk of landslides.

RESUMO

As natural backwater structures, landslide dams both threaten downstream human settlement or infrastructure and contain abundant hydro-energy and tourism resources, so research on their development feasibility is of great significance for permanently remedying them and effectively turning disasters into benefits. Through an analysis of the factors influencing landslide dam development and utilization, an index system (consisting of target, rule, and index layers) for evaluating development feasibility was constructed in this paper. Considering uncertainty and randomness in development feasibility evaluation, a cloud model-improved evaluation method was proposed to determine membership and score clouds based on the uncertainty reasoning of cloud model, and a cloud model-improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP-Cloud Model) was introduced to obtain weights. Final evaluation results were obtained using a hierarchical weighted summary. The improved method was applied to evaluate the Hongshiyan and Tangjiashan landslide dams and the results were compared with the maximum membership principle results. The results showed that the cloud model depicted the fuzziness and uncertainty in the evaluation process. The improved method proposed in this paper overcame the loss of fuzziness in the maximum membership principle evaluation results, and was capable of more directly presenting evaluation results. The development feasibility of the Hongshiyan landslide dam was relatively high, while that of the Tangjiashan landslide dam was relatively low. As suggested by these results, the evaluation model proposed in this paper has great significance for preparing a long-term management scheme for landslide dams.

RESUMO

China experiences frequent landslides, and therefore there is a need for landslide susceptibility maps (LSMs) to effectively analyze and predict regional landslides. However, the traditional methods of producing an LSM are unable to account for different spatial scales, resulting in spatial imbalances. In this study, Zigui-Badong in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area was used as a case study, and data was obtained from remote sensing images, digital elevation model, geological and topographic maps, and landslide surveys. A geographic weighted regression (GWR) was applied to segment the study area into different spatial scales, with three basic principles followed when the GWR model was applied for this propose. As a result, 58 environmental factors were extracted, and 18 factors were selected as LSM factors. Three of the most important factors (channel network basic level, elevation, and distance to river) were used as segmentation factors to segment the study area into 18 prediction regions. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was used to optimize the parameters of a support vector machine (SVM) model for each prediction region. All of the prediction regions were merged to construct a GWR-PSO-SVM coupled model and finally, an LSM of the study area was produced. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the outcomes of the GWR-PSO-SVM coupled model and the PSO-SVM coupled model were compared using three evaluation methods: specific category accuracy analysis, overall prediction accuracy analysis, and area under the curve analysis. The results for the GWR-PSO-SVM coupled model for these three evaluation methods were 85.75%, 87.86%, and 0.965, respectively, while the results for the traditional PSO-SVM coupled model were 68.35%, 84.44%, and 0.944, respectively. The method proposed in this study based on a spatial scale segmentation therefore acquired good results.

RESUMO

Robust inventories are vital for improving assessment of and response to deadly and costly landslide hazards. However, collecting landslide events in inventories is difficult at the global scale due to inconsistencies in or the absence of landslide reporting. Citizen science is a valuable opportunity for addressing some of these challenges. The new Cooperative Open Online Landslide Repository (COOLR) supplements data in a NASA-developed Global Landslide Catalog (GLC) with citizen science reports to build a more robust, publicly available global inventory. This manuscript introduces the COOLR project and its methods, evaluates the initial citizen science results from the first 13 months, and discusses future improvements to increase the global engagement with the project. The COOLR project (https://landslides.nasa.gov) contains Landslide Reporter, the first global citizen science project for landslides, and Landslide Viewer, a portal to visualize data from COOLR and other satellite and model products. From March 2018 to April 2019, 49 citizen scientists contributed 162 new landslide events to COOLR. These events spanned 37 countries in five continents. The initial results demonstrated that both expert and novice participants are contributing via Landslide Reporter. Citizen scientists are filling in data gaps through news sources in 11 different languages, in-person observations, and new landslide events occurring hundreds and thousands of kilometers away from any existing GLC data. The data is of sufficient accuracy to use in NASA susceptibility and hazard models. COOLR continues to expand as an open platform of landslide inventories with new data from citizen scientists, NASA scientists, and other landslide groups. Future work on the COOLR project will seek to increase participation and functionality of the platform as well as move towards collective post-disaster mapping.

RESUMO

The fragile ecological environment near mines provide advantageous conditions for the development of landslides. Mine landslide susceptibility mapping is of great importance for mine geo-environment control and restoration planning. In this paper, a total of 493 landslides in Shangli County, China were collected through historical landslide inventory. 16 spectral, geomorphic and hydrological predictive factors, mainly derived from Landsat 8 imagery and Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM), were prepared initially for landslide susceptibility assessment. Predictive capability of these factors was evaluated by using the value of variance inflation factor and information gain ratio. Three models, namely artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and information value model (IVM), were applied to assess the mine landslide sensitivity. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and rank probability score were used to validate and compare the comprehensive predictive capabilities of three models involving uncertainty. Results showed that ANN model achieved higher prediction capability, proving its advantage of solve nonlinear and complex problems. Comparing the estimated landslide susceptibility map with the ground-truth one, the high-prone area tends to be located in the middle area with multiple fault distributions and the steeply sloped hill.

RESUMO

The main goal of this study was to use the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) to expand the quantity of landslide samples for machine learning methods (i.e., support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression (LR), artificial neural network (ANN), and random forest (RF)) to produce high-quality landslide susceptibility maps for Lishui City in Zhejiang Province, China. Landslide-related factors were extracted from topographic maps, geological maps, and satellite images. Twelve factors were selected as independent variables using correlation coefficient analysis and the neighborhood rough set (NRS) method. In total, 288 soil landslides were mapped using field surveys, historical records, and satellite images. The landslides were randomly divided into two datasets: 70% of all landslides were selected as the original training dataset and 30% were used for validation. Then, SMOTE was employed to generate datasets with sizes ranging from two to thirty times that of the training dataset to establish and compare the four machine learning methods for landslide susceptibility mapping. In addition, we used slope units to subdivide the terrain to determine the landslide susceptibility. Finally, the landslide susceptibility maps were validated using statistical indexes and the area under the curve (AUC). The results indicated that the performances of the four machine learning methods showed different levels of improvement as the sample sizes increased. The RF model exhibited a more substantial improvement (AUC improved by 24.12%) than did the ANN (18.94%), SVM (17.77%), and LR (3.00%) models. Furthermore, the ANN model achieved the highest predictive ability (AUC = 0.98), followed by the RF (AUC = 0.96), SVM (AUC = 0.94), and LR (AUC = 0.79) models. This approach significantly improves the performance of machine learning techniques for landslide susceptibility mapping, thereby providing a better tool for reducing the impacts of landslide disasters.
